Local artist Perry Wicks is a longtime resident of the Bitterroot Valley whose work defines the Rocky Mountain folk art aesthetic. Perry was born and raised in North Dakota and after his military service ended up in Western Montana in the mid-1950s.

Commercial and residential painting became his career and exposed him to new experiences working with color in an era when commercial paint came only in white and the craftsmen created their own colors. This initial interest in color led him to take up small-scale folk painting as a hobby. Today, his work explores local cultural subjects with the committed attention to detail of a contemporary Grandma Moses.
