Molly Murphy was born in 1977 in Great Falls, Montana. A mixed blood descendent of the Oglala Lakota tribe, Murphy was raised in western Montana and earned a bachelor's in fine arts from the University of Montana in 2004. Currently, she works in a variety of media, predominantly printmaking and beadwork. Murphy combines contemporary design and media with imagery and skills learned at a young age in her tribal community.
"I draw inspiration from traditional designs in beadwork and parfleche painting. Parfleche describes the rawhide boxes and cylindrical cases used for transporting food and clothing in the 19th century as well as the unique and intriguing form of abstract geometric painting adorning the exterior. Parfleche containers were painted and constructed exclusively by women. I continue this long line of women artists by using the basic geometric elements in my beadwork, painting and printmaking to present my view of our landscape and experiences."
