"My journey in art has been one of learning to focus on the process of art instead of worrying about the outcome. Some of my biggest lessons and successes have been the result of mistakes. In painting or pottery I start with a rough idea of what I think that I am working towards; if I allow myself to stay open to the process of creating the artwork, I find that I often go in a different direction than I had originally planned. I don't worry about being typecast in any one particular medium or style of artwork. I find enjoyment in working with a variety of materials and often let the subject matter dictate the medium or style that I intend to work. This often leads to an eclectic body of work, but there is usually something interesting for everyone."

Mike Mickelson is currently the high school art teacher at Stevensville High School where he has taught for the past 26 years. He teaches painting in watercolor, acrylic and oil along with design and pottery. He has taught oil painting in the Adult Education Program for the past 20 years. He is also an adjunct professor for the University of Montana-Western, for whom he teaches art education courses.
