Raised on the family ranch in Montana's Bear Paw Mountains, Jesse Henderson developed a love of the Western lifestlye while being raised in the context of his native Chippewa-Cree culture. He was especially influenced by the stories and influence of his grandmother Mary Jane Henderson. The stories of his people and his love of history figure greatly in his artwork. A self-trained artist, Jesse has an eye for detail that encompasses not only his painstaking historical research, but his meticulous crafstmanship and lifelike renderings of his subjects.

History has always been one of Jesse's star subjects in his artwork, but his most recent series depicting the Native American viewpoint of the Lewis & Clark expedition gives new life to the sketchy details we gain from the journals of the corps members. The first work in the series, Lewis and Clark Encounter the Assiniboines, was commissioned as a mural for the Valley county Historical Museum in Glasgow, Montana. The second piece, The Scarlet Cloth, was chosen as the cover of this year's NeMont Telephone Directory. Offering at the Great Clearing is the third installment in the series, and was chosen by the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, Montana, for a year-long exhibition, as well as being included on commemoritive Lewis and Clark envelopes by the United States Postal Service. While the original 4 by 7 foot oil on canvas painting was purchased and sent to Great Falls for exhibition, its place has been taken in the Sacajawea Gallery by a beautiful artist's proof print, and limited edition photoprints are available as well.

The fourth painting in this series, Lewis and Clark at Traveler's Rest, is in the final stages of completion and will soon be unveiled to the public. Information on the release date and availability of this piece will be updated here as information becomes available.
